Modern flat-screen TVs are designed to be a sleek centrepiece in our living rooms, and mounting them on the wall is the best way to save space and achieve a clean, minimalist look. However, if you live in a newer property or an extension, you’ll likely find that your walls are made of plasterboard (also known as stud walls).
This leads to one of the most common questions we get at Worcester Handyman Services: Can you actually mount a TV on a plasterboard wall without it crashing to the floor?
The short answer is yes. You absolutely can safely mount a TV on plasterboard. However, it requires the right tools, the correct fixings, and a solid understanding of what is behind your wall. Getting it wrong can lead to a smashed television and a very expensive plastering repair bill.
Here is everything you need to know about hanging a TV on a plasterboard wall.
The Safest Method: Finding the Studs
Plasterboard itself is relatively brittle and isn’t designed to bear heavy loads on its own. Behind that plasterboard, however, is a framework of vertical timber beams known as ‘studs’.
The absolute safest way to mount a heavy TV on a stud wall is to anchor the TV bracket directly into these timber studs.
- Use a Stud Detector: A good quality electronic stud finder is essential. It detects changes in density behind the plasterboard, helping you locate the exact edges and centre of the timber beams.
- Check the Spacing: In the UK, timber studs are typically spaced either 400mm or 600mm apart.
- Drill Safely: Once you have marked the studs, you can secure your TV bracket using heavy-duty wood screws. This provides a rock-solid foundation for even the largest modern televisions.
What if You Canβt Find a Stud? Using Specialist Plasterboard Fixings
Sometimes, the studs just aren’t in the right place. You might want your TV perfectly centred above a fireplace, but the timber framing doesn’t line up.
If you have to mount the bracket directly into the hollow plasterboard, standard wall plugs (Rawlplugs) simply will not workβthey will pull straight out under the weight of the TV. Instead, you must use specialist plasterboard fixings.
- Hollow Wall Anchors (Setting Tools): These metal fixings expand behind the plasterboard like an umbrella, spreading the load over a much wider surface area.
- GripIt Fixings: Designed specifically for heavy loads on plasterboard in the UK, these use rotating ‘wings’ behind the board to provide immense gripping strength.
- Toggle Bolts: Spring-loaded toggles that push through the hole and snap open behind the wall, offering excellent resistance against pulling forces.
Note: Always check the maximum weight capacity of the fixings and compare it to the weight of your TV AND the bracket combined.
Choosing the Right Bracket for Plasterboard
When mounting on plasterboard, the type of bracket you choose is just as important as the fixings.
- Flat-to-Wall (Fixed) Brackets: These are the safest option for plasterboard. They keep the weight of the TV close to the wall, pulling downwards (shearing force) rather than pulling away from the wall.
- Tilting Brackets: Similar to fixed brackets, these are generally safe as they keep the centre of gravity close to the wall while allowing a slight downward angle.
- Full-Motion (Cantilever/Articulating) Brackets: Exercise extreme caution here. When you pull a TV out on an extending arm, it creates a massive leverage effect. A 15kg TV on a fully extended arm can exert hundreds of kilos of force on the wall fixings. We strongly advise against using full-motion brackets on hollow plasterboard unless they are securely anchored into the timber studs.
The Hidden Risks of DIY TV Mounting
It can be tempting to buy a cheap bracket online, grab a drill, and hope for the best. However, DIY TV mounting comes with significant risks:
- Hitting Hidden Cables and Pipes: Stud walls are commonly used to hide electrical wiring and water pipes. Drilling blindly into plasterboard can result in electrocution, blown fuses, or severe water damage.
- Catastrophic Wall Failure: Using the wrong fixingsβor underestimating the weight of your TVβoften results in the TV ripping a massive chunk of plasterboard out of the wall, destroying your screen in the process.
- Uneven Mounting: Nothing ruins a living room aesthetic faster than a slightly crooked TV. Getting a perfectly level finish on an uneven wall takes experience.
