Painting fresh plaster is different from painting an ordinary wall. If you skip the preparation or paint straight onto bare plaster, you can end up with peeling paint, patchy coverage, and an uneven finish.
On this recent decorating project in Worcester, we prepared newly plastered ceilings and walls before applying the correct mist coat and finishing coats to achieve a smooth, long-lasting finish.
Step 1 – Allow the Plaster to Dry
Fresh plaster needs to dry completely before painting. Depending on the weather and ventilation, this can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
A good sign it’s ready is when the plaster changes from a dark brown colour to a uniform pale pink.
Step 2 – Apply a Mist Coat
The biggest mistake people make is painting directly onto fresh plaster.
Instead, apply a mist coat using a matt emulsion diluted with clean water. This allows the paint to soak into the plaster and creates a strong base for the final coats.
Always check the paint manufacturer’s recommendations, but many standard contract matt emulsions are suitable for a mist coat when diluted appropriately.
Step 3 – Fill and Sand Any Imperfections
Once the mist coat has dried, inspect the surface carefully.
Fill any small holes or imperfections, lightly sand the area, and remove all dust before applying your finishing coats.
Taking time at this stage makes a huge difference to the final appearance.
Step 4 – Apply the Finish Coats
Once the mist coat has fully dried, apply your chosen paint following the manufacturer’s instructions. Two coats are commonly needed to achieve an even finish and good coverage.
